New look for new book.

All new look for Baseball Rules in Black and White's web site and mobile landing page.  In most cases no big deal right?  Simply hire some web designer tell them what you want and bingo there you have it.  Not so fast, I hired no one.  I did though initially pay webs.com a relatively small price to provide me with their (easy to use) tools to create the site.  A few hundred hours later and I now have an all new look for my new book release,

Baseball rules have many layers, when one infraction takes place it can morph throughout the entire playing action and in some cases become completely circumvented by another rule or simply disregarded by the outcome of the play. Then throw in the unknown of a player’s actions it becomes clear why the baseball rule book by nature is complex and difficult.

NFHS, Point of Emphasis: Bench & Field Conduct

When the National Federation of State High School Associations comes out with a Point of Emphasis regarding a specific rule, it's important. When they emphasize that rule two years in a row, it must be extremely important.  

The 2017 edition Baseball Rules in Black and White "High School Baseball Rules Made Easy” rule 3-3-1i on page 23 states regarding:

                          Bench and Field Conduct Summary

•       No one other than the batter, base runners, on-deck batter, base coach or the nine defense players are to be outside the dugout (bench) during a live ball. 3-3-1i, Page 23

From an umpire’s perspective: By keeping non-active participants away from live ball play and creating space it reduces their ability to negatively interact with playing actions.  No non-essential people in live play area, you have fewer potential problems. By reducing problems you help maintain sportsmanship.  

There are dozens of reasons coaches dislike this rule, and none of those reasons help or hurt their team.  Do not cave on this rule. It is not an option.  No one has the authority to pick and choose which rules to follow, hence the reason the NFHS has emphasized the importance of this rule two years in a row.

Recently I have had the opportunity to present Baseball Rules in Black and White to over 120 accomplished umpires at Mr. Billy Haze’s Black and Blue Umpire camps in Sacramento and Riverside California. The overwhelming, response was extremely positive and significant. 

I spoke directly to dozens of seasoned umpires.   I heard them voice their pleasure that finally there is a rule book that makes it easy to find, read and comprehend complicated rules.  Not only did these men speak for themselves, they also volunteered their opinion that this book would provide a significant advantage to beginning officials as well. 

As promised, the 2017 Edition of Baseball Rules in Black and White is in development with the production team at Lulu Publishing.  The release date is December.  The new edition includes the 2017 high school rule changes and three additional rules. Also coming out in early spring will be the 2017 Baseball Rules in Black and White “College Baseball Rules Made Easy” version that will include the additional chapters and the 2017 college rule changes.

When something new comes along, being cautious is wise, but if being cautious prevents you from doing your job better, that is unwise.  The new user friendly format in this book should not be feared, but rather embraced as these books can only help every official become better, and isn’t that an umpire’s prime objective?
